So, what is our solution? In our letter addressed to California Governor Jerry Brown, we provided a list of actions to take. Our overall solution was to have Californians make the switch from cow products and other products they currently consume to goat products. To the right, you can also see what other ideas we had in order to push people to MAKE THE SWITCH and GO GOAT! We wanted to raise awareness through public service announcements, issue rebates when people purchased goat products, subsidize farmers to move their cattle to other states that are not in a drought or to discontinue breeding, and to increase the production of goat products within California. The more local farmers that raise goats and sell goat products, the more inclined people are to buy the products and MAKE THE SWITCH. Why? People want to support their local communities and farmers, hence farmers markets. People tend to feel better about their food when it is fresh and grown locally, so if local farmers switch their focuses to goats, people will wish to purchase their goods.

Suzanne Pish states that people should eat goat meat! Why? Most of the world's population (3/4) consumes goat meat already. Within the past 15 years, the increase in ethnic groups in the United States has lead to a healthy and growing demand for goat meat within the U.S. Goat meat is 50% lower in fat than American beef and 40% lower in fat than chicken without skin. Pish even believes that "it has good flavor."

Did you know that there are tons of advantages and benefits to goat meat? At http://www.womenplanet.in/health-fitness/advantages-health-benefits-eating-goat-meat, there are written facts on the health benefits of eating goat. Not only is it good for your heart, but it is also a great meat for Americans to consume, as our nation struggles with obesity and goat is a type of lean meat. It is high in protein and iron, while also being low in fat. After a long list of health benefits and why goat meat provides those benefits, the author also writes about how goat meat should be stored and gives suggestions on ways it can be served. As Singh, a mother of two and entrepreneur writes, the only downsides to goat meat is that people should not over consume it and that just like any other type of nonorganic meat, people can experience side effects from inorganic materials in the goat meat is not organic.

Today, we posted a video on YouTube around our event at The Athenian School for people to try goat products. (You can read more about the event and what we learned below in the post written on 5/21.) We brought goat cheese and goat milk to school in order to increase awareness on our cause and for people to try them and it was a success! The video uses images from the event and captions about why YOU should make the switch. You can view our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47EAW8y3nvs

Today, we completed our Political Campaign Poster. It is geared towards The Athenian School and the community within Athenian because it is going to be displayed there. Our goals for this poster were to have a healthy balance of text and images, to target it specifically at athenian, to create a call to action, and to provide reasons or evidence as to why people should support our campaign. To the right please find an image of our poster.

Dear readers and Supporters,
Thank you for the continued support of our campaign. We created a change.org petition in efforts to encourage Jerry Brown to take measures to increase the amount of goat products consumed in California. If you could take a minute to sign our petition, it will be greatly appreciated! When you visit our petition, you will find a large portion of our letter written to him. In it are our reasons why we believe people should make the switch, the many health and environmental benefits of goats/goat products, and our suggested solutions to help reduce water usage around our food and livestock. You can sign our petition and read more about our campaign at: https://www.change.org/p/jerry-brown-preserve-water-by-switching-to-goat-meat-and-goat-products?recruiter=302502829&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=share_email_responsive

Today, at The Athenian School in Danville, CA, students and faculty were given the opportunity to come out and try goat products like goat cheese and goat milk. Our goal was to show them that goat products truly taste good, and that making the switch would not be too bad. A common response we received was that the goat milk was very similar to cow's milk. The only difference people saw was that it had a slightly strong taste. Students genuinely enjoyed the products. We set up with Mark Lukach's cricket sampling event. Mark is a Upper School History teacher that found the statistics around food-based water waste astonishing. Many students were motivated to try the crickets and the goat products. As a result, students would create "cracker sandwiches" with goat cheese and cricket!

In Dr. Thomas Cooke's article "The Benefits of Goat Milk vs. Cow Milk," he declares and expands on why goat milk is better for people. Dr. Cooke has 5 main reasons for believing so:
1. It is less allergenic
2. It is homogenized naturally (Cow milk is not naturally homogenized and therefore it is more expensive to homogenize it and requires more resources than goat milk.)
3. It is easier to digest than cow milk
4. It is very rarely a cause of lactose intolerance
5. It is a BETTER MATCH to the HUMAN BODY
To read more about it, please feel free to take a look at Dr. Cooke's article here: http://www.mtcapra.com/benefits-of-goat-milk-vs-cow-milk/
